It’s been a week since I’ve been back from my whirlwind tour of the United Kingdom, and I’m still on cloud nine! I had the most incredible time meeting so many of you. Your warmth, kindness, and most importantly, thirst for sisterhood left me energized and excited about the future. I wanted to share a quick recap of my trip + a special gift to say thank you for all the love and support you showed me.

On Friday, I had dinner with some amazing content creators, got to meet some new ladies and finally connected IRL with some I’ve been in contact with over social media. Spoiler alert: they’re even better in person! [heart emoji]

On Saturday, I finally got to start meeting my UK HH Fam! I headed over to Maidenhead and spoke at the At-Tawheed Islamic Center, then spent some quality time with my girl Sebina. Special shoutout to

On Sunday, I got to meet some incredible ladies in Birmingham. This day really showed me the power of the HH Fam! When one of our London hosts wasn’t able to host anymore because of Covid, we put out a call, and were blown away by the responses! I wanted to give a special thank you to

On Monday, I spoke at the London School of Economics. Speaking to students at uni holds a very special place in my heart. The energy is electric, and the air is abuzz with hope, aspirations, and so much hope for the future. It’s contagious. After the event, I had dinner with some of the ladies in attendance and had an incredible night!

Wednesday was my last day in the UK, and what better way to end the tour than with another HH Changemakers event – this time, in Canary Wharf! Hosted by the ever gracious 

 (who I met in a Changemakers event in Chicago by the way!!), we had a fabulous meeting full of girl talk and making connections that will hopefully last a lifetime!

A Message from Melanie About a Small But Important Change at Haute Hijab

Dear new hijabi … this letter is for you.

Welcome to the beautiful world of hijab, and congratulations! As you begin this new journey, take a moment to center yourself and set your intentions. Why are you wearing it? And most importantly, 

Our prayer for you is that you always, always center your intention around Allah (S). Wear hijab for Him, because He asked you to – not to please a family member or placate your community. Not to make a political statement, but because Allah (S) asked you to wear it to represent Islam and to be protected.

As you start the new school (or work) year, you may find yourself the only (or one of a few) hijabis in your school. Depending on the community you live in, the support you may (or may not) have around you, and your own state of mind, it may be fairly easy to continue on as you were – or you may face some hardships in your new journey.

My advice to you: Do not shrink yourself to make others around you feel more comfortable with your hijab. Wear it proudly and step into your power as a servant of God. He created you with your own talents and personality for a reason. Find your purpose and be tenacious in its pursuit.

Know your priorities and act accordingly. Do the inner work so that your soul is stable and unwavering no matter what’s thrown your way. Remember, despite what anyone may say, you are worthy because Allah (S) said so. Do not associate your strength and self worth with anything or anyone other than Him.

. Seek out good friends who will remind you of Him, or at the very least do not pull you away from Him. When your understanding of Allah (S) grows, so will your trust and eventually, your love for Him and His commandments. I pray that this leads you to wear your hijab with so much pride to be a visible Muslim woman.

Beyond being a symbol of your faith, your hijab is also something you physically wear, so have some fun with it! Experiment with 

 until you arrive on ones that you love. A great hijab can make all the difference when you step out – it can elevate your outfit, make you feel beautiful and confident, and be a form of self expression. Feeling bold? A lively print or bright color might be the one! Feeling cool and casual? Try a comfy jersey. Feeling smart and in charge? A power print or elevated neutral can help you assert your presence in the room.

If our hijab is harming or hurting us or is uncomfortable in any way, that simply means we’re doing it wrong. Allah (S) would never harm us and there is always a solution. Having the right

Lastly, remember that you are human. Wearing hijab does not put you on a pedestal nor does it require you to be

And just like that … another year in the books, 

. With 2021 closed and in the books and 2022 freshly unfolding in front of us, I can’t help but reflect on just how much we’ve all changed in the past two years. In 2021, Allah (S) taught us to hold on to Him and trust His plans, even with our eyes closed. Last year we grappled with the insanity that overlapped from 2020 and had to slowly shed who we used to be – and begin to transform into our new selves. And still, it was about trusting Allah (S) through the unknown. 

This year, we laughed and cried together. We were vulnerable with one another. We uplifted each other, and we supported each other. And for you, and the Haute Hijab community, I will be forever grateful. Serving Allah (S) is my biggest driver – through serving you. It is what brings me the most joy and peace, Alhamdulillah. 

As I look back at 2021 at HH, I’m nothing short of proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together. Here are just a few highlights:

This year, you helped us donate more than 700 hijabs to Afghan refugees.

Stock up, you’ll want this essential in all the must-have colors.

 Hand wash or machine wash warm only with other scarves in like colors. Tumble dry on low. For make-up or oil stains, spot treat with stain remover. Due to the nature of the stretch fabric it will shrink up in the wash. Once ironed, it’s as good as new!

Our Hijab Fabrics, When to Wear Them & How to Wash Them

For Women's History Month, we are sharing stories of some of our favorite 

, female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (S). These women are the foundations of our histories, and their lives are a multitude of lessons for us all.

The story of Al Khansa (ra) has always been one of my favorites and one that never left me since I read and learned of her so many years ago. It was during the “Companions of the Prophet (S)” 

 class, and what struck me about that class was not only how many companions of the Prophet Muhammad (S) were women, but just how incredible these women were. It pained me that I didn’t learn of these women growing up, and I wanted their stories to spread far and wide.

The story of Al Khansa (ra) is one of recognition of one's gifts and talents and extreme conviction in Allah (S) and His promise. Her full name is 

Tumadir bint ‘Amr ibn Harith ibn al Sharid

, but she went by Al Khansa (ra), or the brave and smart one. A poet, Al Khansa was incredibly gifted and known for her honor, beauty and fame. She was famous for her eulogies about her two brothers who had passed. She recited about her brother Sakhr,

Why do you not cry for the bold and the brave

Why do you not cry for the youthful master

One day she recited her poetry to the Prophet (S) and he responded, “More, O Khunaas.” I thought so much about this. Here’s a woman who approaches the Prophet (S), who was probably surrounded by other companions in what I picture in my mind to be a crowded city square. He listens to her beautiful poetry and not only recognizes and appreciates her unique gifts and talents, but encourages her with the words, “More, O Khunaas.”

Oh, what that must have meant to her. To have this man say those words to her. He didn’t tell her that she shouldn’t be performing her poetry in front of men, that her voice is 

and she should be ashamed – no. Rather, he said, “More, O Khunaas.” 

Not only did he encourage her, the Prophet (S) would often call on Al Khansa (ra) to recite her poetry and genuinely enjoyed her beautiful gift. She would then listen to the Prophet (S) as he recited the Quran, blessing all those around him with the beautiful gift of Allah (S)’s words.

Years passed and her conviction in Islam strengthened after accepting the truth of 

 and pledging her allegiance to Islam and the Muslims. Long after the passing of the Prophet (S) during the reign of Umar (ra), Al Khansa (ra) and her four sons headed out with the Muslim army (

) to Iraq in the battle of Al Qadissiyah. 

Before the battle commenced, Al Khansa gathered her four sons and encouraged them to fight with bravery and remember the reward for martyrdom – paradise. She reminded them that the eternal abode of 

is better than the temporary home of this world. She told them:

Sure enough, her four sons, filled with bravery and determination, headed to the most heated part of battle. All four were martyred. When word of their deaths reached Al Khansa (ra), she said, “Praise be to Allah who has graced me with their martyrdom. I only hope that I will be joined with them by His mercy.”

How far Al Khansa had come from mourning and lamenting the death of her brothers in her famous poetry filled with sadness, to praising God when learning of the death of her four sons. It reminds me of the great justice of God, and how he works. God will test your beliefs. He will purify you until your understanding of your beliefs is in line with His truth. That purification process, while it sounds great, can be an incredibly taxing, arduous process. While the reward is worth the struggle, to look into the depths of your soul and break your internal belief system is no easy feat. After all, this is the same woman who once recited,

If it were not for the many others weeping

Also for their brothers, I would have killed myself

May we all have the strength and conviction of Al Khansa (ra) in Allah (S) and His truth, and may we all never be shy to step into our gifts and talents as Al Khansa (ra) did. She knew what she was good at and leaned into it. She received great fame as a result but more importantly, she was true to herself and fully accepted the love God gave her through her beautiful gifts. May Allah (S) have mercy on her and her four sons.

Al-Khansa Stepped Into Her Gift as a Poet & Learned the Greatest Lessons of Faith

As this year comes to an end too, so too does our partnership with FEKKAI. How I Got Healthy Hair in 2020 with Fekkai

I have to admit, it’s been a *long* time since I’ve taken the time to sit down and write one of these. So much has happened over the past year, it’s hard to know where to even start. I feel like we’ve all experienced whiplash as we look around and wonder what happened to the world over the past seven months. Despite all the turmoil, uncertainty and transformation, we at Haute Hijab were silently working on our top-secret “athletics collection” (as we called it internally), grinding day in and day out until launch day this past week. It’s been a long time coming and something you all have been asking for since the early days of HH. Despite the constant requests, I knew we wouldn’t be able to do a sport hijab justice until we had the right team in place.

It was in early 2019 when Gizelle and I started interviewing potential designers to take the lead on designing the collection. We were looking for someone with the experience, passion and the commitment to sustainability necessary to create the perfect product. We found all this and more in our former Director of Design & Innovation, Mireia Lopez. She took the lead and designed the incredible collection you see today. In that time, the brand team got to work crafting the campaign, messaging, visuals and all the other nitty gritty details you see today. If you follow me on Instagram stories, you most likely saw all the mood boarding, photo shoots, video shoots, fun with athletes and so much more that went into this launch.

There was one notable moment in the conception of 

I’ll never forget. Back in February, Frankie, our video producer, was presenting his athletics campaign video pitch, and I was *so* moved by his thoughtful ideation and story of the campaign video that I actually cried in that meeting when I saw what this could look like and the opportunity we had to change the narrative – not only of Muslim women in sport but the perception of Muslim women as a whole. If you haven’t seen the video, definitely go watch it 

 That prayer break in the video – all Frankie’s idea. That’s right, it wasn’t a Muslim on the team who came up with that. When I asked Frankie about it later, he told me that he observed a marked change in our behavior and demeanor when we came back from prayer – that there was a sense of calm and a groundedness that stood out to him.

Ultimately, that’s what this work is all about. Whether it’s someone on our team, those who watch the video – anyone whose perceptions are changed in a positive way about who we are as Muslims – that is a win in my book. It’s the opportunity for Muslim women to see themselves in a way they haven’t before. Not a diversity checkbox in an ad where we’re now somehow “liberated” and “empowered” because they’re finally acknowledging us, but celebrating the fact that we’ve always been empowered. And, telling it like it is through our unique stories.

The other piece that was so important to me was amplifying the voices of athletes who have overcome real odds to be where they are today. Most notably, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, our Haute Hijab Sport Ambassador. We all felt her incredible story isn’t amplified enough. It’s not talked about enough. We as a community have not held her up high enough. We wanted our campaign to be the Colin Kaepernick moment Nike gave him. The fact that Bilqis fought and won the ban against hijab by FIBA paving the way for hijab-wearing women to play professional basketball anywhere in the world is unbelievable. The fact that she did all that while sacrificing her basketball career is gut-wrenchingly remarkable. It was the crux upon which the “Can’t Ban Us” campaign was born.

We wanted to share her story (and others) while reminding our community of women that no one can hold us back. No rule, no governing body, no ban, is going to stop us. I’ve never seen a collective of women more vocal, more outspoken, more principled and with as much tenacity and heart as Muslim women. That’s what the Haute Hijab Sport campaign is all about, and I pray that as it continues to roll out in the coming weeks, you feel motivated to join the movement, learn more about these incredible athletes, share their stories and take pride in our sisters paving the way forward for future generations. We are, after all, the most powerful women in the world ;)

Melanie's Musing – No One Can Ban Us, No One Can Hold Us Back

When I look back on the biggest moments here at Haute Hijab, few come close to the feeling of elation I have today. This one is important. Not just because we're putting something functional 

beautiful into the world, but because this one carries great weight. Weight from all those strong, trailblazing, fierce Muslim women upon whose shoulders we all stand. This is about our freedom. Our innate right to defy societal expectations and truly break barriers.

For too long, Muslim women have been left out of the conversation around athletics. Women who wear hijab have been banned from playing their sport professionally, disqualified for wearing hijab in school sports and altogether overlooked and regarded as a group of women who aren't athletic – or worse, aren't interested in sports. And yet, Muslim women are more engaged in sport than ever. It's time we claim our spot in the ring.
