In the tapestry of Islamic tradition, the journey of Isra and Mi'raj stands as a remarkable testament to the profound connection between the earthly and the divine. This celestial journey, undertaken by the Prophet Muhammad (saw), not only marked a moment of extraordinary revelation but also intertwined itself with the significance of Friday, a day of special blessings in Islam.

As we continue our focus on salah and prayer, this exploration delves into the miraculous journey of Isra and Mi'raj, shedding light on its divine revelations and the pivotal role Friday plays in the hearts of Muslims, weaving together a narrative of spiritual transcendence and communal devotion.

Isra and Mi'raj, a significant event in Islamic tradition, holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. This miraculous journey is believed to have occurred in the month of Rajab a year before the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah, during the night when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was transported from Mecca to Jerusalem and ascended (likely from the site of the Dome of the Rock) through the heavens. This awe-inspiring event is mentioned in the Quran

Albeit briefly mentioned, this verse provides a foundational account of the journey. Furthermore, in the hadiths, particularly those found in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, we find more detailed and vivid descriptions of this celestial voyage.

According to these hadiths, the Isra and Mi'raj involved 

a physical journey and a spiritual ascent

 against the backdrop of intense pain and hardship for our beloved Prophet. In the company of the archangel Jibreel, Prophet Muhammad (saw) met and conversed with previous prophets such as Adam, Abraham (Ibrahim), Moses (Musa) and Jesus (Isa) (as) during his night journey. This extraordinary gathering of prophets symbolizes the unity of the Abrahamic faiths and serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of Allah’s messengers throughout history.

The pinnacle of the Isra and Mi'raj was the Prophet's ascension through the heavens, where he encountered celestial wonders and experienced a closeness to the Divine that is beyond human comprehension. This journey reaffirms the Prophet's unique and exalted status in Islam and serves as a source of inspiration and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide. Isra and Mi'raj, therefore, hold a central place in Islamic spirituality and the rich tapestry of Islamic tradition, offering believers a glimpse into the extraordinary and the profound.

One of the pivotal moments during the Isra and Mi'raj was when Allah (S), in His infinite wisdom and mercy, prescribed the five daily prayers as an obligation for the Muslim 

. Whereas Allah (S) initially made 50 prayers obligatory for Muslims, 

with the intervention of Musa (as), this number was brought down to five

. This divine commandment holds immense significance in Islamic faith and practice, as salah is a fundamental pillar of a Muslim's daily life. The importance of these five regular prayers is emphasized in the hadiths and Islamic tradition and is expressed in the Quran.

Allah (S) specifically addresses the significance of establishing regular prayers. He states.

These verses highlight the crucial role of prayer in a believer's life. It signifies that success in this world and the Hereafter is intrinsically tied to one's devotion and submission during prayer.

Isra and Mi'raj, therefore, not only provided the Prophet Muhammad (saw) with a miraculous journey through the heavens but also bestowed upon the Muslim Ummah the divine gift of the five daily prayers. These 

prayers give us the immense opportunity to connect with the Creator, seek forgiveness, guidance and strength, and reinforces the bond between the individual and their faith. It is a reminder that prayer remains a steadfast and essential practice for Muslims, ensuring spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (S) amid life's challenges and distractions.

" in Arabic, holds a unique and cherished status in Islam as a blessed day. Among the days of the week, Friday is considered the most special, and it carries immense significance for Muslims worldwide. Allah (S) mentions the importance of Friday:

This verse underscores the significance of attending the Friday congregational prayer and prioritizing the remembrance of Allah (S) over worldly affairs on this blessed day.

In addition to the Quranic guidance, hadiths also emphasize the importance of Jumu'ah and the Friday congregational prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

This hadith highlights the exceptional nature of Friday as a day of significant historical events and a day on which the Last Hour will occur.

Furthermore, Jumu'ah serves as a gathering day and communal worship for Muslims. It is a time when the Muslim community comes together at the mosque to offer the Friday prayer, listen to the sermon (khutbah), and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. The congregational prayer on Friday is seen as a means of seeking Allah's (S) blessings, forgiveness and guidance, making it a spiritually enriching and rewarding experience for believers.

In essence, Friday is not just another day of the week for Muslims; it is a day of spiritual rejuvenation and communal unity, a reminder of the importance of faith in our lives.

The journey of Isra and Mi'raj and the inherent significance of Friday exemplify the multifaceted nature of Islamic faith and practice. The celestial journey of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) serves as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and a testament to the profound connection between the earthly and the divine. 

And while the word “obligatory,” or fard, is used to describe our five daily prayers, consider how much of a gift salah is to us as Muslims in how it gives us the chance to slow down, converse with Allah (S) and worship Him. Simultaneously, Friday, the day of gathering and communal worship, stands as a reminder of the importance of unity and devotion in the Muslim Ummah.

Together, these elements form a harmonious faith narrative, guiding believers towards a deeper connection with Allah (S) and a greater sense of community, enriching the tapestry of Islamic spirituality and tradition.

The Miraculous Journey of Isra/Mi'raj – Celebrating Salah, Divine Revelation & the Significance of Friday

It was a crisp, quiet morning, and the moon's pale glow hung in the sky when I woke up. The clock read 4:30 am, a few minutes before the Fajr prayer time. I had been working late into the night, crafting words and sentences for an upcoming article, and fatigue had dulled my senses. In the warmth of my blankets, the temptation to simply close my eyes for a few more minutes was overpowering.

When I woke up again, I glanced at the clock. It was 5:45 am! My heart sank. I had missed Fajr. Guilt washed over me like a tidal wave. How had I let this happen?

I had always taken great pride in my commitment to prayer, and this slip hit me hard. The feeling of neglecting my duty to Allah weighed heavily on my soul.

But in Islam, there is mercy; there is a way to seek redemption for missed prayers. And so, with a heavy heart, I set out to make amends. After the sun rose and the world began to wake, I performed ghusl, the ritual purification, and then returned to my prayer rug. I offered the Fajr prayer I had missed with utmost humility and sincerity.

As I bowed and prostrated, I felt overwhelming relief and gratitude. It was as if my guilt had lifted with each prayer movement. Allah's (S) mercy enveloped me, reminding me of His boundless forgiveness. I had made a mistake, but through my actions and repentance, I was on the path to rectifying it.

The experience of missing Fajr prayer and then making it up is a powerful lesson for me. It highlights the importance of vigilance, humility and seeking forgiveness when we fall short in our faith. Missing our salah is serious business and not to be taken lightly. But it does happen, and Allah's (S) mercy is always accessible to those who sincerely turn to Him.

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to let our priorities shift. Performing the five daily prayers is one of the most fundamental and essential practices for many Muslims. Not only do these prayers serve as a direct connection to Allah (S), but they also offer a sense of discipline and spirituality to our daily routine. Let’s explore the importance of performing prayers on time, the guidelines for making up missed prayers, and how to address a period of laxity in prayer.

The significance of performing prayers on time cannot be overstated in Islam. It is one of the pillars of the faith and a constant reminder of our submission to Allah (S). Quranic verses and hadiths emphasize the importance of adhering to the prescribed prayer times. Allah (S) says:

This verse encourages Muslims to be diligent and committed to maintaining their prayer habits and to approach their prayers with a devout and focused mindset. It serves as a reminder of the central role of prayers in a Muslim's life, emphasizing the importance of consistency in performing them.

Our beloved Prophet (saw) also stressed the importance of prayer, saying:

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) conveyed a profound message about the importance of prayer in this hadith. He stated that the covenant between believers and Islam is the act of prayer itself. This means that prayer is a fundamental aspect of the faith and a symbol of one's commitment to Islam. 

The hadith sternly warns against neglecting or abandoning the prayer, equating such negligence with disbelief (

). It serves as a strong reminder of the gravity of missing prayers and underscores the necessity of upholding this essential pillar of the faith.

Missing prayers in Islam is potentially detrimental to a Muslim's spiritual life, connection to Islam, and relationship with Allah (S). Performing prayers on time is a direct and intimate connection between the individual and their Creator. Through these prayers, believers communicate with Allah (S), seeking His guidance, forgiveness and blessings. Neglecting or missing prayers can gradually erode this spiritual connection, leaving a void in one's heart and soul. Additionally, regular prayer is a purification process, cleansing the soul from sins and impurities. Missing prayers may allow these impurities to accumulate, hindering spiritual growth.

Prayer instills mindfulness and constant remembrance of Allah (S) throughout the day, helping individuals maintain their moral compass and stay on the path of righteousness. In essence, missing prayers not only jeopardizes a Muslim's spiritual well being but also weakens their bond with Islam and their relationship with Allah, making it imperative to uphold this essential practice.

Life can be unpredictable, and there may be times when we miss one or more prayers due to various reasons. In Islam, guidelines for making up missed prayers are known as 

Sincerely intend to make up the missed prayers solely for the sake of Allah (S).

 Start by making up the missed prayers in the order they were missed. Begin with the most recent one.

You can make up missed prayers at any time, as there is no specific time frame. However, it is encouraged to perform them as soon as possible.

 If you've missed multiple prayers, it's important to calculate and track them to ensure they are all made up.

 While making up missed prayers, recite the same 

Sometimes, individuals may go through periods of laxity in their prayer routine. It's always possible to return to regular prayer and seek forgiveness from Allah by following these steps:

 Sincerely repent for the neglect of prayers during the period of laxity and seek Allah's forgiveness.

 Begin performing the five daily prayers regularly, ensuring they are performed on time.

 Engage in additional acts of worship, such as voluntary prayers (

), to strengthen your connection with Allah (S).

: Maintain consistency in your prayer routine and never underestimate the power of regular supplication.

Missing multiple prayers, especially to the extent of neglecting them for years, represents a significant departure from the core principles of Islam. It reflects a period of spiritual laxity and disconnection from one's faith. Such a prolonged absence from the practice of salah can have a profound impact on a Muslim's spiritual life, leading to a sense of emptiness, guilt, and distance from Allah (S).

However, Islam is a religion that values repentance and redemption. Even after years of not offering salah, a sincere return to the path of faith is possible and highly encouraged. Seeking forgiveness, reintroducing regular prayer, and making a sincere effort to reconnect with Allah (S) can gradually mend the spiritual void created by years of negligence. It serves as a testament to the mercy of Allah (S), who welcomes His servants back with open arms, reminding them that it is never too late to rekindle their faith and devotion through prayer.

Performing prayers on time is a vital aspect of a Muslim's life, reflecting our devotion and submission to Allah (S). We can make prayers up with sincerity and dedication if we miss them. Even if we have been lax in our prayers for an extended period, returning to regular prayer is both possible and highly encouraged in Islam.

Remember, Allah (S) is most merciful and forgiving, and He awaits our return to Him through prayer and repentance.


The Importance of Timely Prayer and Making Up Missed Prayers in Islam

My eyes open in a gentle flutter, and I stretch to the musical purrs of my cat, Sage, at the foot of my bed. The sky is still in opaque darkness, and I feel a sense of welcomed aloneness as a new day has been gifted to me. This is the time of day, sandwiched between the night and the morning, that I feel most connected to Allah (S). My routine is simple: perform 

If any of those steps are missing, my body and soul feel slightly off for the remainder of the day. As someone who prides herself on being a self-proclaimed “spiritual scientist,” I wanted to explore why I felt that way. In my quest to answer these questions, I uncovered the undeniable truth behind the power of prayer.

The Islamic tradition, rich in its practices and rituals, offers more than just a religious doctrine to worship and converse with Allah (S); it provides a holistic approach to well being that harmonizes life's mental, physical and spiritual aspects. Prayer (

) are integral components of this tradition, deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and the practices of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

Let’s explore three ways in which performing our prayers provides so many mental and physical health benefits.

 Regular prayer and meditation can bring significant mental health benefits. The practice of salah, especially in the early hours of tahajjud, offers a tranquil environment for self-reflection and connection with Allah (S). This quiet time allows for clearing the mind and reducing stress and anxiety. 

The repetitive nature of dhikr, the act of remembering Allah (S) through phrases like 

, functions as a form of mindfulness meditation, helping to focus the mind and foster a sense of inner peace.

 Physically, the acts of wudu and salah are akin to gentle exercises. The movements involved in salah – standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting – improve flexibility and promote blood circulation. Regular prayer can contribute to better posture and muscle tone. Additionally, the discipline of fasting, particularly during Ramadan, has been noted for its detoxifying effects and its role in improving metabolic health. We know that’s not why we fast, but what a wonderful side benefit!

 On a spiritual level, prayer and meditation strengthen one's connection with Allah (S). This connection is pivotal in Islamic spirituality. It provides a sense of purpose and direction, aligning one’s actions and thoughts with divine will. Prayer is not just a ritual; it is a conversation with Allah (S), a moment to express gratitude, seek guidance and find solace in the divine presence. 

This spiritual practice fosters a deep sense of peace and contentment, reinforcing the belief in a higher purpose and the transient nature of worldly struggles.

As advocated in Islam, the integration of prayer and meditation into daily life transcends religious obligation, offering a comprehensive approach to nurturing the mind, body and soul. My journey and subsequent research into the effects of these practices have led me to appreciate the profound wisdom in these rituals. 

They are not just acts of worship but also tools for holistic well-being, enhancing mental clarity, physical health and spiritual connectivity. As I continue my daily routine of tahajjud, wudu and chai, I am reminded of the harmonious balance these practices bring to my life, enriching my days with a sense of fulfillment and tranquility.

3 Ways Our Practice of Salah (Prayer) and Dhikr (Meditation) Deeply Benefits Our Well Being

Recently I returned from the trip of a lifetime with my family, something we were wanting to do  from the time my daughter graduated from high school three years back. But you know, COVID times. We took our children (two out of three, as our profoundly autistic eldest son stayed home to be spoiled rotten by his four grandparents) to visit the three holiest mosques to Muslims - Al  Aqsa in Al Quds (Jerusalem),  Masjid Nabuwi in Madinah and Masjid Haram/Ka'ba (where we did our Umrah) in Makkah.

It was the trip of a lifetime filled with worship, learning of Islamic history, visiting of Islamic sites and masajid important to  faith and heritage as Muslims. Throughout the trip, I had a list (as do most all Muslims when they travel for Umrah or Hajj) of prayers people asked me to make for them.

There were prayers on the list that people hadn't asked for, but I wanted to make as well. And some of those prayers were for people dear to me (and humanity at large) who are not Muslim. 

Prior to leaving for the trip, we had an impromptu office discussion one day about if Muslims, we are allowed to make prayer for non-Muslims, especially those who are sick. The answer felt obvious to us (um, yes), but we wanted Islamic scholarly verification of this from an Imam, and Ustadh(a) or  someone with appropriate knowledge.

And so our CEO Melanie put the question to her father, Imam Mustapha Elturk of the Islamic Organization of North America. This was the response he sent me:

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Not only are we allowed to make du'a for them for healing, using the prophetic du'a or any d'ua for a cure or a healing, but we are encouraged to visit them and even support them financially from the Muslims’ public charity to cover medical costs if the patient does not have sufficient funds.

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِهِ ) اشْفِها( وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا ‏”

“O Allah, the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble and heal him/her, for You are the Healer. there is no healing except your healing, a healing that does not 

The Prophet (saw) would make this du'a for anyone who was ill, and by the mercy of Allah (S), they would be cured.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

"In the Name of Allah, I seek refuge in the

and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.”

Note: The patient (who is a non-Muslim) may make this du'a, starting with “in the name of God (Allah).” Hopefully he/she believes in God, the creator of the universe and our Creator. The person should place his/her hand on the part of the body that requires a healing and invoke the du'a. It is preferable to say it seven times.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ”

“In the Name of Allah, Who with His Name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing” To be recited three times.

Can You Make Du'a (Prayer) for Non-Muslims Who Are Ill?

(supplication) hold a pivotal place, serving as sources of guidance, solace and spiritual nourishment. The Quran is more than a religious text. It is a comprehensive guide for life, addressing aspects from morality to law, personal conduct to community welfare.

Allah (S) says, "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah." [Al-Baqarah 2:2] The act of reading the Quran, therefore, is not just a ritual but a transformative experience, offering insights and wisdom for all facets of life.

Du’a is a Muslim's way of asking for Allah's (S) help or forgiveness. It demonstrates a person's dependence on Allah (S) and is a testament to their trust in His (S) plan. The Prophet (saw) said, "Du'a is worship." [Tirmidhi] Muslims express their deepest desires, fears and gratitude through du’a, fostering a personal and emotional connection with Allah (S).

As we approach 2024, we – the Haute Hijab team – think that the most appropriate way to see 2023 out is sharing Quran 

or du’as that we held deep in our souls the past year, and which we intend to carry with us into the new year. This practice underscores the profound impact of Islamic teachings on daily life and personal growth. And as you read the Quran ayahs and du’as we chose, you’ll see that many of us chose the same ones, though what we gained from these particular verses differ from person to person.

Ending the year with a focus on the Quran and du’a represents our collective commitment to spiritual growth, self-reflection and living a life aligned with Islamic principles. Each chosen verse or du’a carries personal significance, reflecting individual journeys and aspirations.

As a Palestinian, the verses I'm choosing are very relevant and tied to the genocide happening in Gaza – as well as the calamities that struck different parts of the world throughout this year. From major earthquakes, to civil wars, to other genocides (like in Congo), these two ayahs keep coming to mind over and over again, and they're what give me solace. What a stark reminder this year has been about the temporary state of this 

, and a constant reminder that we were created for the afterlife. That is the true life.

Those who are martyred are good. They are in the highest of heavens with Allah (S) "rejoicing in Allah's bounties". It is painful for us to watch on our end, but Allah (S) gives us reassurance that there is no suffering for them. It helps me to not despair.

The second verse I would like to reflect on is actually a few verses down from the above two verses of Surah Imran:

Over and over again I have watched the people of Gaza remind themselves – in the face of death and destruction and profound loss that is hard to comprehend – they keep repeating 

 Allah (S) alone is sufficient for us and He is the best protector. Over and over again this is on their tongues. And so over and over again, it's on my tongue.

Allah (S) is sufficient for us. Allah is the best protector. He knows. He sees. There will be a day of reckoning. He knows. He sees. He is enough for us. He is the best protector. Without Allah (S)'s reassurances, we would surely have fallen into despair.

Hasbiya Allahu wa ni'ma alwakeel. Alhamdulillah.

Currently, The Quran verse in my head is 

 (حَسْبُنَا اللَّـهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ) It’s been so tough to bear witness to a genocide. Yet, the Palestinians in Gaza suffering from death and destruction continue to express the strength of their faith over the calamities they are experiencing as they say this exact prayer over and over again.

To have this level of unwavering belief that Allah (S) alone is sufficient for us and He (S) is the best disposer of affairs is empowering and freeing! Despite any hardships or uncertainties when it comes to my family, health or major life changes, this prayer calms my heart, and I know that eventually things will be okay because Allah (S) is in control.

The first two months of the war on Gaza felt like an everlasting funeral at home. I found it hard to carry on with my day-to-day tasks. My two young children’s needs were the only thing pulling me to go through the motions of our daily routine. My mind, heart and soul were in a different space than my body. I couldn’t comprehend, or understand what was happening, what is still happening, so I held on to the only thing I knew to be true.

One thing that I know will never fail me. Only one thing mattered to me in that phase of processing my grief, and that was to turn to the promise and reassurance of the only one who has full control over all affairs, Allah (S). In my despair, confusion and heartache, the words of Allah (S), 

Also, “Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.” [3:173] As we enter 2024, these words are my anchor as my people continue to endure an ethnic cleansing and fight for their freedom.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

Prophet Muhammad (saw) was recorded saying to a man who asked, “'How can I feel at ease when the Angel of the Trumpet has put his lips to the Trumpet and is waiting for the order to blow it?' He perceived as if this had shocked his Companions, so he told them to seek comfort through reciting: 

This du'a is from Surah Al Imran, verse 173, which states, 


This Quran verse has been all over social media the past several months as the genocide in Gaza and strife in other parts of the world have gripped our hearts. And really, this is a verse that has been carrying me in 2023, which is yet another year that has shown me that I am not in control, that I can plan, but Allah (S) is the best of planners. That whatever Allah (S) deems to be sufficient for us, we must find our contentment in that. He is, indeed, the best disposer of affairs.

As you're reading this, my family and I are in Makkah for Umrah, Alhamdullilah. But we were unable to bring our profoundly autistic eldest son with us, and that has been the biggest vice-grip around my heart. My husband and I went for Hajj nearly 20 years ago, and I still remember what I prayed for when I first saw the Ka'ba. My prayer hasn't been answered exactly how I asked for it. But I am content, because it is being answered in a way that is best for me, for my kids, for my son. To be content in Allah's (S) will is the hardest and best thing we can do.

As I approach 2024, the ayah from the Quran, "Say (on My behalf), 'O servants of Mine who have acted recklessly against their own selves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Surely, Allah will forgive all sins. Surely, He is the One who is the Most-Forgiving, the Very-Merciful.'”[39:53] holds a profound significance for me. This verse is a powerful beacon of hope and forgiveness, reminding me that no matter the mistakes I've made or the challenges I face, the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (S) are always accessible.

It reinforces the importance of seeking forgiveness and maintaining hope, especially when I am burdened by my shortcomings or the difficulties of life. As I step into the new year, this message of divine compassion and endless mercy is a guiding light, inspiring me to maintain an optimistic outlook and a renewed dedication to my personal and spiritual development.

Heading into 2024, this verse becomes particularly meaningful in the context of my work with a racial equity nonprofit. It embodies the principles of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness that are crucial in my interactions and efforts. The ethos of this ayah aligns with the values of understanding, tolerance and the capacity to forgive, not just personally but also in the wider societal sphere. 

In a world often rife with division and injustice, this message of the Quran offers a path toward healing and unity. It inspires me to approach my work and daily life with a heart that reflects these divine qualities, reminding me that every individual has the potential for redemption and change. This encourages me to adopt a more empathetic and inclusive approach in all my endeavors as I navigate the year ahead.

As we embrace 2024, let us carry with us the wisdom of the Quran and the power of du’a, allowing them to illuminate our paths and enrich our souls.


Entering the New Year With the Quran Verses & Du'as That Carried Haute Hijab Through

‘Tis the season when Christians around the world are ready to celebrate the season of Jesus (as) and the story of his blessed birth, the strength and sacrifice of his mother, Mary. The Prophet Isa (as) and his mother, Maryam (Mary), hold a uniquely exalted position as a symbol of purity, resilience and faithfulness, deeply revered in Islamic tradition and across multiple faiths.

Bottom line – Muslims love Maryam (as). Maryam (as) is the only woman named in the Quran, and her story is recounted with great reverence and detail. Her significance extends beyond her role as the mother of a prophet to embody qualities of piety, faith and devotion. Her significance is underscored by numerous references in the Quran and Hadith, and her life serves as a beacon of inspiration, especially for Muslim women.

Maryam's story in the Quran begins even before her birth. Her mother dedicated her unborn child to the service of Allah (S), hoping for a son:

However, when Maryam was born, Allah (S) accepted her with a great reception. This early narrative establishes Maryam's sanctified life, marked by divine acceptance and a deep commitment to worship.

The most extraordinary element of Maryam's (as) narrative in Islam is the miraculous conception and birth of Isa (as). In Surah Maryam (19:16-21), the Quran vividly recounts this pivotal event. It portrays Maryam as a devout worshiper who had pledged her chastity to Allah (S). In these verses, Allah (S) sends an angel to Maryam (as), announcing to her the news of a holy son.

Her response, marked by astonishment and modesty, underlines her virtuous nature:

This miraculous birth, conceived without any male intervention, is a cornerstone in Islamic belief, underscoring Allah (S) omnipotence and will. It's not just a narrative of a prophet's birth; it's a divine sign, a symbol of Allah’s (S) power to enact His (S) will beyond human understanding.

This event in Maryam's (as) life is a profound testament to the notion that Allah's (S) power is limitless, and His (S) plans transcend human norms and expectations. The birth of Isa (as) serves as a pivotal sign for humanity, illustrating the profound capabilities of divine intervention and the special status bestowed upon Maryam (as) in the faith.

Maryam (as) is an emblem of piety and righteousness, a status vividly depicted in the Quran. Her steadfast faith, particularly during the challenging period following the birth of Isa (Jesus), is profoundly admired and serves as an inspiring example for believers. 

Ayat (verses) 27-28, in Surah Maryam narrates the moment when Maryam (as), holding her newborn son, confronts her community. The reaction of her people, marked by surprise and judgment, is met with her dignified silence and trust in Allah's (S) plan:

This moment emphasizes her virtues of patience and resilience against societal judgment, showcasing how her unyielding faith in God's wisdom and plan allowed her to withstand the skepticism and criticism of her people.

Maryam's (as) story in the Quran, especially these verses, is often cited to underscore the importance of trust in Allah (S), patience in adversity, and resilience against societal pressure. Her narrative teaches that true piety and righteousness involve unwavering faith. Maryam's (as) example remains a powerful source of inspiration, reminding believers of the virtue of steadfast faith in the face of societal scrutiny.

Maryam serves as a profound source of empowerment and inspiration for women, illustrating the high esteem that Islam places on the spiritual and moral capabilities of women. The Quran praises Maryam in Surah Al-Tahrim (66:12):

This verse highlights her exceptional piety and unwavering faith in God's words, positioning her as an exemplar of moral and spiritual excellence.

Furthermore, this hadith reinforces this perspective. Sahih Bukhari (3433) quotes Prophet Muhammad saying, “Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, and Asiya, the wife of Pharaoh.”

This hadith elevates Maryam (as) as a paragon of perfection, paralleling the highest spiritual achievements of men and thus challenging traditional gender roles.

Maryam's (as) story powerfully counters the notion that devotion and righteousness are gender-specific. Her life, as portrayed in the Quran and affirmed by hadith, is a testament to Islam's recognition of the potential for spiritual and moral excellence in women. Maryam's (as) narrative offers a powerful counter-narrative to traditional gender roles. It remains a source of inspiration for women in Islam, demonstrating the respect and honor Islam places on the spiritual capabilities of all believers, regardless of gender.

Maryam's (as) story is not just a narrative about the miraculous birth of a prophet. It is a story of unwavering faith, resilience in the face of adversity, and the triumph of devotion over societal norms. Her life transcends mere historical or religious significance; it offers timeless lessons of faith, virtue, and the power of Allah’s (S) will.

Maryam (as) stands as a beacon for believers, exemplifying the virtues cherished in Islam and demonstrating women's esteemed status in the faith. Her story continues to inspire and guide Muslims around the world, making her one of the most significant figures in Islamic tradition.

Maryam (Mary) is Well Loved by Muslims, & Her Spiritual Legacy is One of Faith & Empowerment

 It's time for our annual #LikeYouMeanItHH end-of-the-year reflection time when we discuss what it means to renew our intentions around hijab and various aspects of our lives. While in past years, we’ve reflected on what it means to "wear it [hijab] like you mean it," this year, that focus felt too narrow and out-of-touch with the realities of our current world and lives. These are difficult, challenging, painful, somber times - for a number of reasons. And we want to explore what it means to live and focus “like you mean it” against the backdrop of everything we are enduring. We invite you (and ourselves) to renew our intentions and reflect on what our faith, families, and commitment to fighting for justice mean to us.

As Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank (and other places) are undergoing genocide and constant war and bombardment in the weeks since October 7, with thousands upon thousands of Palestinians and children martyred and millions more displaced from the rubble of their homes, so many of us around the world are learning  impactful lessons through the immense strength and faith of Palestinians.

 after losing their children to bombings. We are seeing  medical professionals risk  and lose their lives to give every single last bit of care that they can give to their patients. We are bearing witness to parents writing their names and their children's names on the limbs of their sons and daughters, so they might be identified if their body is blown up in the yet another bombing attack. We are seeing journalists providing coverage of the war losing their lives at an alarming rate.

And through it all, we are seeing in real time the almost other worldly faith and strength of Palestinians as they face genocide and destruction, their utter reliance on Allah (S) to protect them and provide them justice either in this life or the next. We see non-Muslims reading the Quran and making videos on social media, trying to understand where this trust in Allah and faith is coming from. 

Bearing witness to all this is changing us. Something is happening, and as we explore the depths of what is important to us and where our intentions like in this month around our #LikeYouMeanItHH campaign, we asked you a question: 

What you have learned from Palestinians the past two months?

1. I think collectively our perspective on what it truly means to have 

Tawakkul is defined as "the belief in the sufficiency of Allah (God) that invokes patience and efforts to achieve goals while accepting the outcomes unconditionally." Palestinians are a living embodiment of this.

2. It has given me a new purpose to my postgrad research - humanity in political economy.

Alhamdullilah. We hope this research will help affect positive change.

3. Oppressors say truth and justice are complicated. It isn't; it's covered up and we accept.

So true. Of course to understand the history of the region and what has happened, one must read, gather information, seek resources and take the time to learn and understand. But at the end of the day, oppression isn't a complicated thing to understand.

has engrained in my soul. I will live by this.

"Allah is enough for me, and  He is the disposer of my affairs." Indeed once we truly accept that for ourselves, we can face anything. We will experience pain and grief, but we know Allah (S)'s plan is greater.

for others. I am reevaluating my life what I do and don't do.

6. Palestine liberated me of my worldly desires of more money, bigger house. It changed me to the core.

Ameen, ameen, ameen. We think this has been happening for so many of us. There's nothing wrong in  having nice things, but what benefit is there in always desiring more material goods and focusing solely on that? We must center deen and balance it with dunya. 

after three years, despite my personal issues with God. I did for the Palestinians.

Alhamdullilah. So many of us are becoming more regular and stronger in our prayer, even praying tahajjud. 

has increased tremendously, Alhamdullilah.

It's like we all are being shown that anything can happen, anything can be taken from us . Our lives and loved ones aren't promised to us. So we return to dhikr and prayer.

9. I feel like Palestine is literally re-wiring my  entire brain. Forever changed.

May Allah (S) forgive us for our failures and wrongdoings of the past and accept and keep us on the path we are on .

10 . I have understood the need for us to be confident and unapologetic for the sake of Islam.
