As we sprint towards the new year, it’s time for our annual reflection on the blessings we enjoyed and the lessons we have learned over the past 365 days. And, what a year it’s been for Haute Hijab! Desperate for a fresh start after the tumultuous year prior (like so many of us were), we couldn’t get to 2021 fast enough. However, we’re not sure if any of us were able to catch a breath, as transitioning into the new year was quickly followed by a new presidency, the January 6th Capitol riot, an unprecedented winter storm in Texas and the global supply chain crisis – just to name a few major events and challenges.

Yet, our tenacity has grown and our resiliency hasn’t wavered. We are grateful for also experiencing beautiful moments and significant accomplishments as a company and collective community that could not have happened without you. Please join us as we reflect back on 2021 at HH!

It has been a few years since we set our intentions to bring HH to the United Kingdom! Alhamdullilah, after much research, prayers and a few setbacks, it finally happened in May of this year, and we could not have been more excited about it!

High shipping costs, customs fees and long delivery times were part and parcel of sending out orders from the U.S. to the UK prior to us having a presence there on the ground. We knew we needed to have a fulfillment center physically present in the UK to alleviate these concerns, and 2021 was the year it came to fruition! It has been seven months since we launched in the UK, and the love and support have been amazing. The launch has not come without its challenges, but we look forward to perfecting our service to the beautiful Muslim community in the UK, and we are working tirelessly to do so.

 colors were made available along with a restock of some of your favorites. The delay on these two collections due to supply chain issues was a major hurdle for us (and so many other companies) but your patience and understanding kept us going and just made their release even sweeter!

Of course, the year is not over yet and we’ve got one more addition that you have demanded since the launch of our HH Sport. On December 21, our entire sport collection will be available in black. You asked, and we delivered.

Every year we take the opportunity to give back to our community in different ways and it is especially during Ramadan that we reset our intentions to serve. This year, we joined 

 (ACC) to empower Muslim students to go to college without worrying about taking on interest-bearing loans to do so. ACC is a U.S.-based organization that provides Muslim college students with interest-free loans for higher education. By doing this, they hope to bring about a generation of graduates that will have a strong Muslim identity and be well-versed in their fields, using both for the benefit of mankind. Alhamdulillah, with your help, we surpassed our goal of $15,000!

In the spirit of giving back, we not only focused on serving through charity but also through nurturing our community. In 2021 we brought back the HH Halaqas during Ramadan centered around issues impacting us, including an 

 with Layla Abdullah-Poulos, an insightful conversation about our 

 with Dr. Rania Awaad, a beautiful discussion about 

 with Dr. Rand Diab, and more – all of which can be found on our 

HH supported ACC for Women's Empowerment & their partnership up with the Ikram Foundation to provide interest-free loans to women for their education.

Come November, we partnered with ACC once again for

A portion of all sales proceeds from November 30th was donated to ACC for Women’s Empowerment or ACC4WE, a program dedicated to empowering Muslim women to achieve their educational and career goals through the support of interest-free loans. The HH community came through and maximized our donation!

We also worked to serve our communities through the continuing content we produced on our blog, which was then shared across our social media channels to encourage discussion, dialogue and growth. In August, during the Islamic month of Muharram, we passed the mic to Shi’a Muslim women in our community for their 

. In September, with the 20th remembrance of 9/11 upon us, we 

. And in November we were honored to share stories of 

We also continued to report and on and work towards ending hijab bans (

 across all areas of life in the face of such bans with our ongoing #CantBanUs campaign. See

Last but certainly not least, another major highlight from this year is our wonderful addition to the team! First up, Bayan Fares came on as our Social Media Specialist and our Community Manager. You may have already enjoyed some of her fun reels on Instagram over on our 

 page. She also brought back the print try-ons, and we can’t wait to see everything else she’s got planned for all of you!

The HH team (those of us who could make it, including some of our spouses and children) gathered for a picnic in NYC in August of 202.

Next, Haneen Abugharbieh joined as our new Logistics Specialist. She is no stranger to the HH community and comes armed with four and a half years of experience as our former Senior Account Manager. Haneen is hard at work applying her expertise and skills to elevate your experience for unmatched service and quality, and we are so excited to see her take off in the upcoming year!

 as our newest fashion writer! She’s an incredible modestwear stylist with an eye for hijab fashion and trends, so don’t miss any of her posts in the coming new year!

These milestones remind us of what we’re grateful for and also what it took to get here. No matter what life has thrown our way, we can look back and say that we’ve grown and have done our best to meet the challenges that came our way. It’s time to leave behind that which doesn’t serve us and apply our growth with an optimistic outlook for what is to come.

Hijabs, Charitable Endeavors, #CantBanUs & More – HH's 2021 Year in Review

You’ve probably seen the meme I’m referring to with the headline of this post. It’s definitely been … an experience, this return to full-time in-person learning. I’m definitely glad my kids are back in school, but sometimes it feels like I’ve 

. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. If you’re doing great, by all means, share some golden tidbits with the rest of us, because it has been quite a ride so far!

Honestly, I was excited about all three of my angelic (*cough*) boys being in school full time this year. My five-year-old started kindergarten, so I was especially excited for him and relieved to know that I wouldn’t have to balance his school day on an iPad with my work, calls and meetings! I feel for those of you who did just that when schools were closed last year. Shoutout to our Marketing Manager, Noor, who did this all of last year with her son!

My oldest, who is in fourth grade, first joined in-person learning at his current school last year. Because of the extra precautions and the part-time in-person schedule, parents never got to visit. It felt great to finally go to his school for the first time this school year and connect with the teachers and administration in person. It was also extra special to visit my kindergartner’s school and see him in class, since we were this close to missing out on that experience.

Now here’s the thing: Schools opened, but COVID didn’t go away. It just mutated and continued its rampage. Unfortunately, my family and I experienced this first hand when my husband came down with sudden cold symptoms one night. I was a little concerned but not totally, since we’re both vaccinated. My children, however, are all under the age of 12, so they are not. The next day he felt dizzy, and by that evening he had tested positive for COVID. The following morning was the start of our two-week quarantine.

Things started off SO great with my mute button betraying me on an early morning zoom meeting. Yelling across the room, and apparently into the ears of my colleagues, demanding one kid be nice to his brother, was not embarrassing, not at all. At least my camera was off. By the time our quarantine was over, I had lost my sense of smell and my sanity. Alhamdulillah, my sense of smell eventually came back. Yeah, that was a tough chunk of time.

And although this school year has been better than the last, it isn’t without its challenges. If a student in our district has any COVID symptoms, they stay home and so do their siblings until they turn in a negative COVID test. So when my nine-year-old woke up the other day with a stuffy nose and a minor cough, I found myself sweating it out in the CVS drive-thru, trying to wrangle some swabs up the noses of a four- and five-year-old. I wonder how often we’ll be doing this once Chicago’s brutal winter takes over, but I’ll find out soon enough.

As a bonus, we have also been dealing with a bus driver shortage, something I’m sure many parents across the country can sympathize with. During unexpected mornings and afternoons, you can find me sitting in an incredibly long car line wrapped around the entire neighborhood, dropping off or picking up one of my sons. We then race to pick up my preschooler while my oldest gets dropped off at home by his bus.

I morphed into a logistics manager while figuring out three schedules at three different schools along with the ever-changing procedures surrounding COVID.

Mind you, this is in addition to my full-time work here at Haute Hijab, where I am the CX Manager. If this pandemic has taught me anything, it’s how important it is for companies to be flexible and have family-friendly policies as the norm, and not just during pandemic times. Grateful to HH for being ahead of the game on that one.

And, this has taught me even when things get tough, there is always a silver lining and pockets of joy. Although my husband and I both got sick, it worked out so that when he was down I was doing well; and when I was barely getting out of bed, he was on the upswing – so we were able to hold down the fort and pull through. It was also nice to see neighbors, friends and family come by and drop off food and groceries.

We both have our jobs, and my kids are doing all right back in school. I know many kids across the country are 

This school year is far from perfect, but I’m so glad the kids are back in school and I have much respect for the teachers and administrators who are doing their best to teach our kids (many of whom are struggling after so much time at home) and keep them safe. I hope this school year is going well for you and your family,

For Women's History Month, we are sharing stories of some of our favorite 

, female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). These women are the foundations of our histories, and their lives are multitude of lessons for us all.

If you don’t know the story and work of Rufaida Al-Aslamia (ra) from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), you are missing out. As a working woman, I immediately connected to Rufaida’s (ra) story. Her role as an accomplished nurse and social worker transcends time and carries powerful lessons for all of us.

I was drawn to Rufaida’s (ra) life as a strong, independent woman who was uplifted and empowered by the men around her as a sharp contrast to the struggles women face today in a perpetuating patriarchal society. Rufaida’s (ra) reality juxtaposed against our own made me deeply reflect on how long we, as women, have been demanding our rights and advancing our cause when we were where we needed to be centuries ago!

Growing up, I was introduced to a small number of extraordinary sahabiyyat on a surface level through Saturday school at the local masjid and stories from my parents. I was well versed in their exemplary character and religious piety but not in the pivotal roles they played in their homes and communities as leaders, warriors, nurses, scholars and so much more.

To deeply understand our faith and the legacy of these incredible women is to realize the true extent of our rights and capabilities. It is on us to empower the next generation of women by consistently highlighting and celebrating the accomplishments and the impact of the sahabiyyat of our past.

Rufaida (ra) is one such sahabiyya. She is widely recognized as the first female nurse and surgeon in Islam. She accepted Islam early on and was one of the Ansar women who welcomed the Prophet upon his arrival to her hometown of Madinah. Many accounts of her life describe her as notably kind, patient, and empathetic – all of which shine through Rufaida’s (ra) consistent acts of 

Rufaida (ra) began her path in medicine by learning from and assisting her father, Saad Al-Aslami, who was a physician. She was especially known for stabilizing patients and ensuring their proper hygiene in preparation for more invasive procedures. She provided expert-level care while continuously refining and 

 through hands-on field work. Eventually, Rufaida (ra) courageously took her expertise to the battlefield. She cared for injured soldiers during the battles with Makkan tribes, including the Battle of Al Khandaq and the Battle of Khaibar.

Rufaida (ra) also took it upon herself to share her knowledge and teach other women to work in medicine. In the first ever documented mobile care units – such as we see today with medical field-tents or make-shift hospitals, Rufaida (ra) was able to provide hands-on training to women looking to help provide aid to the sick and wounded. She was then able to organize an invaluable network of nurses, many of which followed her lead and joined her in treating casualties of 

One particular story that struck me comes from the end of the Battle of Khaibar. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) was so impressed with Rufaida’s (ra) medical and nursing work that he assigned her a share of the bounty equivalent to that of the soldiers’ share! Imagine being recognized, empowered and encouraged by the greatest of mankind.

Once the war and battles came to an end, she was permitted by the Prophet (saw) to maintain what was essentially a small clinic in a tent situated inside Masjid Al-Nabawi. This allowed Rufaida (ra) to continue providing medical care and to train more women as nurses.

Rufaida’s (ra) unwavering devotion to caring for others is remarkable. When she wasn’t working as a nurse, she pursued social work and advocated for Muslims in need. She continuously served her community while serving her faith and left behind an incredible legacy that still impacts us today.

If there is anything I learned from Rufaida (ra) it’s not only do we have the capabilities to impact our world, but that we have a right to do so, with the blessings of the Prophet (saw) and the guiding light of other sahabiyyat.

May Allah (S) allow us to find our passion and fulfill our purpose while uplifting our women and connecting with our families, neighbors, and communities through sincere faith and service to one another.

Meet Rufaida Al-Aslamia, a Medical Pioneer Who Impacted Healthcare & Social Work

I decided to stop working about a year and a half after my first child was born. Seven years and three kids later, I started seriously considering going back to work. I always planned to start working again, and once my youngest was ready to join his brothers in school, I thought it was the perfect time to put this plan in motion. However, rejoining the workforce during a pandemic and school shutdowns was not something I was prepared for.

Still, I felt I had a pretty solid plan. Thinking that all three of my kids would be in school, I figured I would finally have the time and ability to focus on work while hopefully managing the balancing act that is continuously required of working mothers. As it turned out, I started working last July when I joined Haute Hijab, when none of my kids were physically in school.

My plan went out the window and, like thousands of women upon whom the struggle of working and disproportionately caring for family became 

Mothers are the queens of “figuring it out,” though. It’s how we navigate anything in our lives that we are either responsible for, committed to or passionate about. There is no quitting; we find a way and get it done (often to the stretching of our own physical and mental health, but that’s another story). I’m not sure if there is anything like the 

of motherhood that would have better taught me this.

Working from home was both a blessing and a bit maddening this year, as umpteen mothers can attest. I needed to find creative ways to keep my younger two, who are four and five years old, busy while I worked and their older brother attended third grade via Zoom. If they weren’t engaged in an activity, they were engaged in a fight. Their toys no longer held their interest, and they suddenly needed snacks every 10 minutes. (Sound familiar?)

In the beginning, I wasn’t trying to balance anything. I just needed to stay afloat. Enter survival mode. How was I going to get through each day, and meetings and calls while also meeting the needs of my kids? This was new for us. We needed a routine that worked for everyone. I had to bend on some rules like screen time limits and take on things I don’t care for, like arts and crafts, but we eventually settled into a groove that took us out of survival mode.

Also, naps were huge. If your kids nap, you’re already ahead. 

(Editor’s note: Sandy is LEGENDARY at Haute Hijab for announcing on Slack that she’ll be gone for 5-10 minutes to put her littles down for a nap, and then she returns in that amount of time!)

Although my end goal was to find balance, writing about my experience has me questioning the very idea of what balance looks like. Is it juggling everything perfectly? Is it kids who (for the most part) feel they have your attention while you get work done? I’m not sure that’s possible depending on how much we want to juggle! Our ambitions might be high, but our time is limited - as are our mental and emotional capacities.

I couldn’t simply add my new HH job into the mix of everything I was already doing. I knew the stress as a result of that was unnecessary. Instead of trying to balance the old with the new, I found myself navigating through work and motherhood by starting fresh. I didn’t need to balance everything. 

 and let go of anything else. Letting go isn’t easy, but balancing it all is tough and puts us in a position where we have less control over what will inevitably get shortchanged.

My non-negotiables are my family and cooking. I’m trying to get consistent exercising back on that list, but in the meantime, I refuse to stress about it. Cleaning did not make the cut either. Between the kids, work and cooking, there wasn’t enough time or energy to fit in all the cleaning I was doing on a daily basis. I also let go of my strict screen-time rules. This happened during survival mode, but much to my kids’ satisfaction, it has stuck.

Time and priorities look different for everyone, but once something gnaws at you for not getting done, you’ll know it needs to be bumped up higher on your list. Anything below it can be postponed or even eliminated as you see fit. It’s more empowering to be deliberate about what will get our full attention vs. what we’re ok with sacrificing.

Truth be told, the flexibility HH extends to the entire team, especially us parents, is instrumental in the way I am able to be there for my kids while I work. Not only am I physically with them in the same space, but I can easily tend to their needs and be hands on all day long. No one bats an eye if I need to jump out of a meeting to help one of the kids with something. 

Also, my husband does help in a myriad of ways. I don’t want to make this sound like I’m doing this all on my own. The hustle is

I don’t have a neat list of advice to offer (

) on how to make this work. We are all, still, literally figuring this out as we go along. And, all our situations are so vast and varied, as are the needs and moods of our kids and our office environments. I just want to offer solidarity in the struggle. There will be hard times for sure, but every new day is a chance to reset and focus.

As we head into the new year with optimism and hope for a fresh start, so many of us are reflecting on all that happened in 2020. Not only did we celebrate our major anniversary milestone this year, but we also introduced game-changing products. In January, the small but mighty No-Snag Hijab Magnets made their debut and have become a favorite of our fans. Sleek and incredibly strong, 

 allowed us to finally get rid of our pins! Poking holes in our hijabs (and sometimes ourselves) quickly became a thing of the past.

! It was hard to choose between all the stunning new colors like Raisin and Deep Fig, which are both gorgeous and universally flattering.

Creating more sustainably-sourced and eco-friendly products has always been important to us. From starting off repurposing vintage scarves into hijabs to sourcing our prints from leftover (deadstock) fabric otherwise destined for the landfill, we continued our 

 to utilize sustainable materials in more of our products and business practices. In fact,
