For some hijabis, there are two very traumatic words we don’t ever want to hear: OIL STAINS. All that rich, decadent coconut oil that we massage into our scalps and those incredible oil-infused hair souffles we work into our tresses – we think they’ll work magic on our hair. And then, it happens. As soon as we wrap our hijabs, it’s only a matter of time before the first dark spot starts to rise to the top of our heads. And before we know it, it’s not just a spot – it’s an embarrassing network of blotches reaching from ear to ear.
Silk-Blend Satin Underscarf
The sustainably processed silk-blend satin lining protects textured hair while keeping it moisturized as the ultra-breathable bamboo viscose jersey exterior delivers cutting-edge anti-microbial and moisture wicking properties that will help keep your scalp fresh and cool all day. Hidden between the fabric is a silicone band that lines the front to keep your underscarf comfortably in place.
Some of us choose to avoid certain fabrics because of this issue or avoid certain colors that show these oil stains more. Or, we purposefully dehydrate our hair if we know we’re wearing hijab that day. Not to mention the endless hand washing and soaking of our hijabs in weird solutions just to get the stubborn stains to fade. Can hijab-wearing women with natural hair dare to have both moisturized hair AND a stain-free hijab AT THE SAME TIME? Well, the time has come. Enter the satin-lined underscarf.
Wait, now let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Satin-lined caps are NOT a new thing. Women have been wrapping their hair with satin scarves, protecting their hair with satin-lined beanies and underscarves, and sleeping on satin pillowcases for decades. Satin tends to trap the moisture in our hair and scalp instead of losing the moisture to the fabric of our turbans, pillowcases or – seemingly – into thin air at times.
But, as hijabis, we needed a product that is particularly designed for our use under hijabs. We needed something for us, by us. An underscarf that is breathable while also being opaque, comfortable, protective of our hair and adjustable for all-day use. An underscarf able to create a flattering shape when layered under hijabs and available in colors that make sense for the contemporary styles.
And so, I leapt at the opportunity to review Haute Hijab's Silk-Blend Satin Underscarf for its official debut. I wanted to see if this underscarf could protect and cover my hair without slippage, be comfortable to wear and be able to handle my oils and hair products. (See a video review here.)

On the day of my product test, I started by first massaging in a normal amount of oil to my scalp as well as hair butter through my hair. I allowed about 30 minutes for the products to absorb before putting on my undercap and chiffon hijab. That’s about as much time as it took to get my kids and I ready for a warm Spring walk in the neighborhood. I wore a new light colored chiffon hijab with no previous staining directly on top of the underscarf and set out on a two-hour walk.
I was amazed to find that absolutely no oil soaked through to the top of my hijab. The only stains I did notice upon inspection were in the area where my hijab wrapped around my neck and the undercap was not covering. I compared the hijab I wore during the test to a hijab I had worn a couple days prior with a non-satin-lined undercap. The difference was glaring – one was an oily disaster; and the other was like new. The silk-blend satin underlining of the HH underscarf only showed a few signs of oiliness.

I was also super impressed by the soft, stretchy feel of the underscarf on my head. It was even comfortable worn over my ears. The satin fabric did not snag my hair like some other caps do – you know the polyester ones that pill up in the dryer? This one also did not overheat on a warm sunny day, and the bamboo outer surface offered just enough friction for my chiffon hijab to stay relatively in place.
Simply put, this is an hijabi must-have. I think it’s time to retire the other underscarves in my hijab drawer. This is the one I’ll be reaching for time and time again.
