Books and writing are my things. I specialized in literary criticism as an undergrad. In graduate school, I focused my thesis on American Muslim literary and formed the NbA (native-born American) Muslims blog. I have been blessed to network with writers, scholars and publishers to highlight the spectrum of writing created by Muslims, feeding our dynamic culture.
Writing has a substantial impact on society. James Baldwin described the societal importance of literature and what motivates writers: “You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world.”
From newbies to experienced writers, I am always on the lookout for what Muslim authors present to the world. Alhamdulillah, every year there are fantastic new books by authors putting out some interesting stuff, especially Muslim women. For real. Muslim sisters are hitting those keyboards and not playing. Below are some that I’ve read and others that made it to my TBR (To Be Read) list. I have included the books’ Amazon blurbs, edited and adapted for publication.
Please note – these are books by Muslim women authors and not necessarily written about Muslim-oriented topics. Also, this list doesn’t even begin to cover everything published by Muslim women authors in 2019! Please add your favorite books written by Muslim women authors in the comments below!
Fiction
I am starting the list with fiction because it is an often dismissed and derided genre in American Muslim culture. Typically, the only books that recieve consistent support from Muslims are Muslim-centered children’s books or YA/NA (young adult/new adult). Consequently, adult fiction authors struggle for acceptance. Fortunately, the gatekeepers fail to hinder authors from creating or building platforms, like Black Muslim Authors, for readers to grow an appreciation for what they do. The Muslim women authors listed here include a range of children’s books, YA, NA and adult fiction subgenres like mystery, fantasy and romance. There are some envelopes pushed but none that have not been before.
