My relationship with covering began when I took my shahadah (testament of faith) in an African American Muslim community. Typical to African American Muslim heritage, the women encouraged each other to wear their khimars (a one-piece hijab covering the head, neck and shoulders) to obey Allah (S) and subvert the dominant social messaging that women wearing less are more liberated. I was fortified with the confidence to embrace covering and infuse it into my faith and social identity. I was not scared to pin a square piece fabric to the back of my head and was unbothered by the looks of those around me. They just had to get used to it. I even made and sold some for a while. The square hijab was my look for decades. When Muslim clothing companies began offering more variety, my style changed. But, Alhamdulillah, my convictions and confidence have remained intact. I love having a chance to explore options about something that is so integral to my daily life.
