Hakeemah's daughters trying on hijab.
I believe in my power as a mother to help establish a positive foundation for my young daughters to embrace wearing hijab in the future. This foundation begins as young as infancy, when they start to see how I dress to leave the home. It develops as they grow into toddlerhood, when they start to emulate my actions, and I intentionally nurture that by speaking to my girls about hijab, how beautiful they are, how the colors make me feel, and how I wrap them.
But above all the cute colors and touchable textures, I speak to my girls about how much Allah (S) loves when we wear it in hopes that it will inspire them to do the same. Although wearing hijab is not obligatory for girls before they hit puberty (and I know others will argue that it's not obligatory at all, but that’s not what this article is about), many girls wear hijab for any length of time as a means of practicing and laying a strong foundation.
When I was younger, hijabs for little girls were not too stylish, and always seemed a bit uncomfortable. They were sometimes over-embellished, either too loose or too tight, and the materials were not always the most comfortable. In an Instagram Live I did with Melanie and my fellow Haute Hijab blog writers (Layla Abdullah-Poulos and Danah Shuli), we talked about finding that balance between encouraging hijab while being cognizant that young girls may be uninterested at times and shouldn’t be forced. And, we all agreed that it was so nice to have better options for younger girls to experiment with hijab then when we were growing up.
I’m thrilled that my daughters get to grow up in an age when girls’ hijabs are being re-invented with minimalism, ease, and fun in mind. While the HH hijabs I love are typically not geared towards young girls (although the Jersey Hijabs could work!), I love seeing other entrepreneur moms teaming up with their creative little ones to create hijabs influenced by the very girls who don them, which has brought forth some of the cutest Mommy and Me sets I’ve seen to date!
If you're looking for some cute hijabs or matching sets for your little one, here are six of my favorites:
My daughters and I are wearing jilbabs from the Ouéd Collection (girls have their faces covered with sticker face masks to protect privacy).
We caused quite the stir a few months ago when I wrote a popular fashion piece here on the The Haute Take about the jilbab, and I’m not done yet! One of my favorite jilbab brands, Ouéd Collection, is launching kids’ jilbabs! These come in two-piece sets, with head covering attached to the bodice and a separate maxi-length skirt. My girls and I felt like the perfect trio in our matching Mommy and Me jilbabs and posed for a selfie. These launch on the Ouéd site just in time for Ramadan 2022, Insha’Allah, and feel free to send a DM to catch them before they go public!
Here’s a fun reel I created, raising a (halal) toast to the girls I love most.
My girls love their Culture kids hijabs so much that they have been their go-to hijabs whenever they choose to wear one to school. The hijabs are super comfortable, stretchy jersey knit that come in two sizes for kids and young adults and are ultra-convenient pre-sewn designs that you can easily slip on and off, no pins needed. These are also available in Mommy and Me sets and come in an array of elegant colors for a trendy, minimalist hijab style.
Created by a mom-daughter duo, Leena’s hijabs are one-of-a-kind that you can customize to incorporate text (like the poetry on the hijab below), names, or icons that the special little girls in your life prefer. The founder of Leena’s Hijabs started off her line with an exclusive set of signature prints that incorporated her own daughter’s artwork converted into the fabric. What a beautiful way to add a special touch to a child’s hijab that truly includes them in the process of hijab wearing! She also carries cute accessories and adorable, fun prints in easy, pull-on styles and kid-friendly sizes.
When it comes to tie dye, Lala Hijabs is queen! Lala Hijabs burst into the scene in 2020 when the global pandemic was ripping through the world and creating so much uncertainty. But it was just what Sana Saleh, YouTuber and beauty blogger, needed to pivot and kickstart a new brand fueled by creativity. She decided to start tie-dying jersey material and selling hijabs, and two years later, Lala Hijab is thriving with their signature tie-dye hijabs available in kids sizes and mommy-and-me sets as well. Tie dye creates such joyful, bright prints that are sure to bring out your little one’s personality and creativity.
My daughter Ayah (5) wearing a Demure Hijab white undercap, and white chiffon kids hijab.
Jersey is such a great material for girls’ hijabs, but what about the little ones who love chiffon? What about undercaps that fit little heads as well? What I love about the kids collection at Demure Hijabs is that they offer chiffon as well as jersey fabrics in smaller sizes, and their kids' hijab are also not pre-sewn. I love options, and it’s great to have these pieces in your kids’ hijab collection as they grow and start to get into different styles and possibly practice with wearing pins.
I suggest these kid-safe hijab clips from Voile Chic. These clips can keep your chiffon hijab in place with no sharp edges, and children can more easily manage them independently. These are also not as dangerous a choking hazard for kids as hijab magnets.
This gorgeous two-piece prayer set is one of my favorite pieces to come out of Zahraa the Label. It features a jilbab-style tied headpiece attached to the bodice as well as a skirt, but Zahraa also added some charming ruffles along the hems for a feminine touch. Batul, daughter of Zahraa the Label founder Zahraa Berro, also was a part of her mother’s inspiration for this prayer set, as well as a collection of slip on girls’ hijabs, which she models herself. Congratulations to this powerful mom-daughter duo!
I hope this quick guide forms a great start when you are searching for convenient and cute hijabs for your little ones.
